Data for Local Innovation grant up to $100,000 to Tanzanian Innovators and Solution Providers | Semezana

The Data for Local Impact (DLI) Innovation Challenge will award grants to Tanzanians (both individuals and organizations) who have creative ideas about how to use or combine data - including open data - in new ways to gain insights or empower people through access to life-changing information. The DLI Innovation Challenge also aims to engage, support, and connect Tanzanian innovators, developers, and solution providers to each other and to opportunities to make a difference in people’s lives.

The DLI Innovation Challenge supports the Sustainable Development Goals and aims to contribute to progress in the areas of Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3), Gender Equality (SDG 5), and Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8). The DLI Innovation Challenge team will award grants to local innovators with the best solutions through a competitive process of up to five Challenges. The first Challenge Window has been launched in October 2016

UNITED NATIONS YOUTH CONFERENCE ON SDGs AT GIMUN 2017, ACCRA | Semezana

The GIMUN Team is inviting young people across the globe to the Eighth Session of the Ghana International Model United Nations in Accra on 3rd-7th January, 2017. This capacity building conference is being organized in partnership with the United Nations University and the United Nations Information Center, Accra   on the theme, “Global Goals; Better People” to discuss how the adopted Global Goals (the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals) could help improve the livelihood of the people of the world.

Benefits                       

Many young people aspire to work with Diplomatic Missions and International Organizations such as the United Nations. It is imperative that these young people build their capacities and sharpen their leadership skills so that when given the opportunity, they can excel. Skills in researching, writing, public speaking, listening, debating, lobbying, negotiations, consensus building and dressing must be enhanced in order to achieve desired success on the work field.

GIMUN Conference is an opportunity for young people to:

THE POWER OF MEDITATION AND POSITIVITY.

Have you ever felt stressed and that the world is a worse place to live? What was the root cause of your stress? Was it breakup of disappointment from your loved one? Was it hardship of life or rejection? Was it fear of losing what you depend on or your life dreams?   If yes what did you do to comfort yourself from this kind of feeling?

Studies shows that no one live without stress because we are surrounded by so many things that makes us demand more than the ability we have to accomplish those demands. But also study suggest that stress is good at some point only people need is how to manage them and coupe with the situation.

I had experienced a life full of stress, strange night mayors, depression and fear of rejection after receiving unsatisfying result of my Form Four exams, no one understood me that it was accidentally, I was seen as a lazy person, someone who playing with life.

My parents could not afford to send me to private school, therefore the only option was for me to go for the short cause which will help me at least to get small job to do.

As everyone, I had a life dream of becoming world peace maker and my role model was Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary General. I wanted to be like him, to help in solving world conflicts, but at that point my dream was turned into a night mayor, I had no help to realize it, I had no shoulder to lean on, it was the time I wished better I could die than living in the world where everything I do has no good end.

Two months later I decided to leave home to my friend’s family, it was not easy but I felt safe than my own home. It is the time I met a wonderful lady whom since then I call her aunt, I remember her telling me that “Don’t worry, this shall pass….. take your time, don’t think too much about it, try to see where you mistaken, everything will be alright”. I decided to start reading and finding best way to overcome stress. I came across the meditation technics by then I didn’t know who engineers them or how to conduct them for mind calmness. I only toon the basic concept of staying in a quiet place, closing my eyes and thinking about nothing.

It was a really amazing experience which turned my life completely. Through meditation I became a new person, I managed to reseat my exams and passed then joined high school and then university to pursue Bachelor of Arts in international Relations of which conflict and conflict resolution was a major.

After graduation I got an opportunity to join Peace Revolution Regional Fellowship which added my experience in meditation and my understanding on how we can solve conflicts by dealing with people’s mind.

I am currently a founder and director of youth led and initiative for peace called One Action Tanzania, aiming at addressing all potential that can cause the conflicts. I now strongly proud to say that if it wasn’t meditation I could not achieve my dream.

My gratitude is to Peace Revolution and World Peace Initiative for introducing this program which impact and change world to a better place, also to my lovely aunt Ms. Shakila Mteti for her positive thinking advice which gave me confidence to sit again for my exams. I can see that my dream is about to be realized in a near future.

Africa's problems needs African solutions

Africa is the second largest continent in the world with population of more than 1.166 billion people of which more than 65% of this population are youth. Africa still face lot of challenges  include high rate of youth unemployment, HIV and AIDS, Extreme Poverty, Malnutrition, civil and political conflicts and many more which makes it among least developed continents in the world.

Empowering youth to take the lead in matters affecting them is among the best sustainable solution to many of these problems. 

By realizing this few youth came together to form African Youth Union a Pan-African Youth lead organization with the vision of making African Youth active and productive citizens who can contribute to a unified, peaceful and prosperous Africa. 

Recently the Union held its 4th Annual summit at Makerere University in Uganda which was attended by youth from different African Regions. Among thing discussed is how African youth and women can positively contribute to the  strong regional integration for sustainable African economic development. Youth participated in this summit agreed that "African Problems needs African Solutions" particularly solutions which come from youth since they have power and talents which is vital for both social, political and economic growth.

The summit ended by announcing new leadership of the organization in which Stephen Machua was announced as African Youth Union President, Olauluwa Abagun as a Vice President representing West Africa Region, Sarah-Leigh Elago as a Vice president representing Southern Africa Region and Julius Kessy as a Vice President representing Eastern Africa Region.

Youth Post join all African to congratulate these young and energetic youth whose vision is to transform Africa into a best place for every human being to leave and change the narratives which define Africa as a dark continent.

The War that every Tanzanian must fight, The War of War against War!

Today in the evening when I was coming out from the office after office hours, I saw number of Uganda Army's Tracks carried hundreds of soldiers full equipped like they are going to the battle field.

As I was still wondering where they are going I decided to ask someone who was near where I was stood.

Hi! I greeted him. “Sorry, where are they going”?

They guy responded... "They are going to Somalia, don't you know the situation in Somalia? The civil war and political unrest that is taking place there?!!!"

Now he was staring at me.... To cut the story short I responded, Ouh! I know, but I had no idea that they are going there.

I am not really sure if they were going to Somalia to rescue the so called political unrest which has taken decades now or they were going to South Sudan since still there is fighting going on, that didn't bother me much, I took a little while to look at those tracks, each had not less than fifty soldiers....

I looked at their faces since I was stood by the road side, I tried to take myself as I was in the track going to the battle field, then I looked back to my family, my friends, my country and every I know in this world....

Unknowingly I found tears flowing down my eyes almost passing the nose as I was looking down. I took myself as them, I took myself to the battle field.

I was shot down dying. I was leaving my beautiful daughter, my mother, my father and brothers. I was living my beloved friends whom we use to enjoy different moments of life, share, care and support each other..... I was dying before accomplishing my life dreams of serving the world as a best peace gladiator and make sure that #NoMoreWarsinAfrica because I died in a war battle.

I thought of my plan of becoming a young successful entrepreneur by #2025 with big media company operating all over the Africa. I realized that I have lost everything I had and planned to make, I was alone.... My fellow soldiers had to move on and try to save themself, no one was there for me...

Pi piiiii !!!!!! Suddenly the hon from a coming taxi as in Tanzania we call them #Daladala woke me up from what I can call it #DayMares, all tracks were gone, the person I was asking also left.

Some of them will not come back... "I thought" they will die on the battle, they will leave their friends and family only because they were serving other people's life....

I wiped my tears and started slowly to walk away.

Now I was not thinking of them again, but I was asking myself many questions of which I couldn't find their answers.

World will be a peaceful place if only People and the Planet will be treated equally

Today is a International Day of Peace where world come together to remember, celebrate and call for Seize Fire to all parties which are in conflict.
2015 does not only mark the 31 anniversary since the International Day of Peace was officiated by the United National General Assembly, but also fall under the arm of United Nations in its 70th anniversary. This year world leaders will meet from 25th September 2015 to adopt New Development Framework under Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a way forward after Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which are going to expire this year. Youth Post in partnership with One Action Tanzania want to use this opportunity not only to celebrate the number of years since UN was formed or since IDP was officiated, but also to call the world community to make sure that whatever action they take if #ForPeopleandThePlanet.
We call individuals, private companies and government leaders to to join this campaign aiming at making world a better and safe place for all all living things.
