SEMEZANA: Africa Hub Coordinator– Civil Society Innovation Initiative

CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation is an international alliance of members and partners constituting an influential network of organisations at local, national, regional and international levels, spanning the spectrum of civil society. CIVICUS seeks to amplify the voices and opinions of ordinary people, giving expression to the enormous creative energy of the burgeoning civil society sector.
Objectives of the Civil Society Innovation Initiative
CIVICUS and Counterpart International are collaborating on the establishment of innovative mechanisms to supportcivil society on a regional level. Specifically, the project aims to establish six regional civil society hubs to improve the effectiveness and viability of civil society initiatives.
The Africa Hub for provision of support to civil society, movements, and human rights defenders with cutting edge and responsive technical services was conceived through a series of consultations at different levels to expand the shrinking civil society space. The consultations took place in various locations in Africa, bringing together different actors, civil society activists, HRDs, women’s representatives, advocates and community based activists. The consultations were attended by over 85 individuals from different backgrounds and different countries. The Africa Hub will be constituted of regional connectors that feed into the continental hub, but enjoying institutional autonomy, connected only with the provision of services.
Participants of the various consultations constituted a team of incubators responsible for structuring, consolidating and distilling the contributions from the various meetings. The final list of support activities was reached based on the priorities and gaps identified during these consultations. Meetings were held in Dar es Salaam (2014), Dakar (2014), Kampala (2015), Nairobi (2016) by a team of the incubators to finalize the activities and plan of action for the Africa Hub. The incubators now wish to recruit a Hub Coordinator.
